The EASI Academy
A very special tennis training and development center

The EASI Academy is a very special tennis training and development organization. Not only do we provide a state-of-the-art professional track training program, we develop citizens, instructors and present and future medical researchers. While we conduct the most advanced tennis training in the area, we also provide avenues for tennis players to discover whether they would, one day, be a part of the medical profession. What we do that is special does not stop there. We take players with physical injuries or mild brain traumas and design a program that will accelerate their recovery and move them forward to a life long romance with the game of tennis.

At the EASI Academy, you will develop at a pace you never dreamed possible. There are five reasons for this:

  • We employ the latest research in the psychology and neuroscience of the human learning process to design a high paced program that dramatically accelerates player development. Hence, all instruction is carefully designed to match the way in which each student learns best. Players often jump from NTRP 3.5 to NTRP 4.5 in as little as eight months
  • We integrate all aspects of player development into a single program. Hence, we begin development of intelligent feet, precision movement, anaerobic conditioning, choreography, stroke development and strategy and tactics on day one
  • Since our philosophy is that every minute counts, all drills and exercises are carefully designed to serve multiple purposes, thus making very efficient use of time
  • All training is designed around the requirements of match play because our focus is on results. Since what you do in practice is reflected in match play, we have designed our program to parallel the demands of match play from precision movements of the wide, on-the-run forehand and backhand to the stress of putting your second serve in play consistently
  • Each program is tailored to the needs and the level of development of the individual student. Hence, every student will be doing what is best for them at all times

We provide two forms of instruction: one-on-one for players who would like to explore the next step beyond conventional training programs and want to see what it is like at the top level of training. We also offer group programs that are very different from the usual situation where each player hits balls in turn in a line of five or six other players. In our group program, each player is busy developing every minute. Because of our community focus, we always look for ways to make it possible for players with promise, desire, commitment and enthusiasm to get the training that will lead to a college scholarship, or to the world of professional tennis.

Why we are able to offer such a diverse and powerful program is a result of the background of our founder, Dr. Brown, who is both a world recognized expert on tennis training and an expert in the application of nonlinear science to the problems of medicine.

Dr. Brown received his Ph.D. in nonlinear dynamics from the University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of numerous papers of nonlinear processes and a draft of his most current paper can be found on this web site ar Research. Dr. Brown is also the author of over 200 articles on tennis training and player development and currently writes for TennisOne.com on the internet, Mid-Atlantic Match Point published in the US Mid-Atlantic Region, and ProCompareTennis.net in England. While conducting research on nonlinear processes at Berkeley, Dr. Brown became interested in Neuroscience (the science of the dynamics of the brain) and in the science of the human learning process. In conjunction with his colleagues at Harvard and Berkeley and through his study of many top tennis professionals, Dr. Brown developed the most scientifically advanced tennis training program now in existence. While it was never his intention to open a training academy, the EASI Academy was founded in McLean, VA in 2007 at the urging of parents and coaches in the area.

In addition to his extensive scientific background, Dr. Brown has taught academic subjects in high school and college, hence he is familiar with the latest advances in education. Dr. Brown has coached tennis at both the high school and professional level. At the high school level, his teams always advanced to the state championship round, placing second and third in the state. At the professional level, Dr. Brown has coached for over 11 years on the WTA Tour, taking a 35 year old woman to a world ranking in three years.

Since its inception, the EASI Academy has become a magnet for eager students to grow and develop and for accomplished players looking for other players with whom to practice or play matches.

One might ask how does tennis and medical research come together to the benefit of both. The answer lies in the relationship between high performance training, the human learning process, and how the brain executes complex tasks. High performance training places extreme demands on both the body and brain. How the brain responds to this depends on how information is received and processed. By developing a system based on how the brain works, we benefit and accelerate high performance training. Conversely, successful high performance training provides deep insights into the inner workings of the human brain. The result is a symbiotic relationship in which each enterprise advances the other. An example of this is our program to use volunteers (who are twins) from the academy to do sleep research. In this program, we anticipate being able to discover specific patterns in the sleeping EEG that are a key to the human learning process. From this we may be able to discover new ways to rehabilitate brain traumas that have damaged the learning process, or to be able to improve the learning processes of the general population. And from this our program may lead to the development of new protocols for education and teaching in high schools and colleges.

In short, the EASI Academy is a truly special training and development center that not only produces high performance players, but also gives back to the community, to education, and to science.
